All Mahindra cars to get petrol variants from 2018

Mahindra & Mahindra, the Indian biggest UV maker is planning to introduce the petrol versions of all Mahindra models from 2018. Each and every product will have the petrol variants in the coming years and the company is working on the new petrol engines, according to Pawan Goenka, ED of M&M. As per the reports, Mahindra is developing on the 1.5-litre petrol engine and the 1.2-litre (mFalcon G80) petrol engine is already introduced in the Mahindra KUV 100, new small crossover. Accordingly, the upcoming Mahindra portfolio will be offered with any of three petrol engines, 1.2-litre, 1.5-litre or 2.0-litre.

Currently, the petrol variants have more demand in the Indian market due to the Supreme Court’s order, registration ban of heavy diesel vehicles with the more than 2000cc diesel engine. To catch the increasing demand for petrol cars, the automakers are planning to introduce the petrol powered cars. Mahindra’s best-selling cars, XUV 500 and Scorpio, have been affected in the Delhi and NCR with the SC’s order so that the UV maker has introduced the 1.99-litre mHawk engine in both models.

According to the SIAM report, the contribution of diesel cars declined from 44 percent to 41 percent in the total passenger vehicle sales in this fiscal year, compared to the same period of previous fiscal.  While the petrol car’s share is increased to 59 percent in this fiscal from 56 percent in the last fiscal year.  

KUV 100 is the first crossover from Mahindra introduced with the diesel and petrol engines in January 2016. Most of the Indian customers opt for the KUV 100 petrol versions as of the affordable price and the several restrictions on diesel vehicles. The carmaker expected that the 40 percent of customers interested to buy the petrol versions, but the result was 50 percent in India.

We expected that the upcoming compact Bolero will get the petrol as well as automatic versions to target the segment brands. Mahindra is considering the new-generation models, which will be developed by the association of SsangYong, for the domestic market. Along with the petrol segment, Mahindra is also concentrating on the category of hybrid and electric vehicles.
